On January 3, 2014 at approximately 7:45 a.m. an iconic building in Bennington, VT was fully consumed by a fire, the store was closed and no one was there. Formerly Haynes and Kane Furniture served the Bennington and surrounding communities for over six decades. After remaining empty for approximately five years, the LaFlamme family had the privilege of restoring the building and serving the are...a for the last year and a half. It quickly became apparent that, even though we have been in business for over a decade and have three other stores that this store and the “Big Chair” were quickly becoming our flag ship.
We are grateful no one was seriously injured. We are humbled and overwhelmed by the dozens of police officers, over a hundred firefighters from three states, over ten companies, the Red Cross, and the many community members who showed up offering support and resources. The American Legion opened its doors and provided a warm safe place. The people in our community were truly wonderful to us yesterday. We can’t thank you enough.
LaFlamme’s did not burn down yesterday. We are still very much here and very much determined to continue to serve a region we grew up in. It is not our products, possessions or our buildings that define us. We are a people. It starts with Christopher Jr. and Angela LaFlamme and flows through to all of our friends, family and employees that make us “LaFlamme’s, not just the store you’ll want to buy from but the people you’ll like doing business with”. The Spirit of LaFlamme’s is more alive than ever.
Our thoughts now go to our employees, customers and the details that need to be attended to. Joanne, Brooke, Adrienne Tyler, Nathan and I will be working out of our Cambridge office (20 min. outside of Bennington) temporarily to fulfill our previous promises to our customers as well as to service any current needs you might have. We can be contacted at (518) 677-3357. We ask that you be patient during this time of transition. We assure you we will be working diligently to get back on course.
Lastly, thank you all for your kind words and support.
The Big Chair
I often find myself saying, "Anything worth doing is usually not easy." The Big Chair has certainly had its challenges since we put it back in place, where it belongs, less than two years ago. It is my absolute intention to have the Big Cha...ir remain where it stands for many, many years to come. As we get farther away from Friday, all of the logistics are becoming more real and every day more of a priority.
I'm happy to say that I've been able to attend to most of the needs of our employees and our customers. I again want to take a moment to thank our community for their generosity, bravery, and selflessness. I am happy to announce that Brooke, JoAnne, Tyler, Nathan, and myself will continue to serve the Bennington community out of our Cambridge store (across the street from Lake Lauderdale) temporarily.
Now back to the Big Chair. It is still very early and we are evaluating the situation and will be making decisions as soon as possible. If it is up to me, all of the options will include leaving the Big Chair in place. Town Officials, once again, have proven to really care about their community and seem to understand the importance of the Chair to me and to all of us.
As for the store, we are considering many options, including maybe a temporary location. But as I mentioned it is very early and my family and I need to take our time to consider these decisions.
Thank you again for your time and patience,
Christopher LaFlammeSee More
